🇦🇺 🐠 Australian government bans gillnet fishing and creates net-free zones in the Great Barrier Reef
Gillnet fishing uses a ‘wall’ of netting hanging in the sea which is designed to trap and entangle fish. However, by 2027 the practice will be completely banned in the Great Barrier Reef world heritage area, which has experienced significant damage as a result of fishing.
The Australian government has also announced plans to create net-free zones in the GBR to better protect endangered marine species like dugongs and hammerhead sharks who can often become entangled and die in nets as by-catch.
